Just curious, why do you change the original part to the Alternate?

It won't be.

The return of the smooth seat!
Regular in 1980, Alternate 2022-2023 and hopefully a Regular again soon and forever

Imo LEGO is doing a good job making Sprue Marks less visible.

Also for this item it was noticed before that there's a difference between
USA and European boxes. My set also has a 4079 Sand Blue and still 4079b in Red
and Reddish Brown.

For the record:
USA box initial inventory 44R2
European box 42S2, white box has the same code.

There is a possible new variant for this. BL only shows one Design ID, because
the new variant is not found in any set so far.

Did you check the Inventory Comparison Tool for this set?
https://www.bricklink.com/r3/inventorycomparison/main.page?sourceB=1&invB=10312-1&sourceA=0&invA=10312-1

If you are not familiar with the Inventory Comparison Tool, this page might help
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2594

You can see that the new Design ID to come is 3662.

Where exactly can I see this? If I open the comparison tool linked to, the changes
section just lists for unknown parts without any information on them other than
the amount. I don't see the number 3662 anywhere.

Anyway, there's a 3662 part on sale on PAB, so I'll buy some and check
the changes.

The answer is in the Help article linked above. You need to change the way you
are viewing the page.

Because 4079 is the historically older part. Is that not the rule?

That is the rule, except when an older variant returns. For 2022-2023 4079b is
the oldest variant. Up to (about) 16 years ago 4079b was the alternate newest
variant.

In my opinion, the part that appeared in the original inventory should stay.

I also don't see the reason for arbitrarily choosing the older variant. As
a seller, I usually find that I have to select the second 'newer' option
when parting out. It's just 2 more clicks on a system that takes way too
many clicks already.

Thanks,
~Jen

Historically, the rule was that the prevailing part was in the regular section
and the less common one (which ever that would be) was placed as alternate. This
was a practical measure taken to help people with the partout process.

However, we changed that later to be that the earliest variant to appear in a
set should be the regular part, and the later appearances became alternates,
regardless of volume - which of course is often difficult to determine anyway.

But this doesn't mean that the earliest version of the part is always regular.
It's the order in which it appeared in the set that counts. In this case,
the non-sprue variant 4079 should be the alternate.
